Beck - Guess I’m Doing Fine

There’s a blue bird at my window
I can’t hear the songs he sings
All the jewels in heaven
They don’t look the same to me

I just wade the tides that turned
Till I learn to leave the past behind

It’s only lies that I’m living
It’s only tears that I’m crying
It’s only you that I’m losing
Guess I’m doing fine

All the battlements are empty
And the moon is laying low
Yellow roses in the graveyard
Have no time to watch them grow

Now I bade a friend farewell
I can do whatever pleases me

It’s only lies that I’m living
It’s only tears that I’m crying
It’s only you that I’m losing
Guess I’m doing fine

Press my face up to the window
To see how warm it is inside
See the things that I’ve been missing
Missing all this time

It’s only lies that I’m living
It’s only tears that I’m crying
It’s only you that I’m losing

Toni Braxton Unbreak My Heart

Don't leave me in all this pain
Don't leave me out in the rain
Come back and bring back my smile
Come and take these tears away
I need your arms to hold me now
The nights are so unkind
Bring back those nights when I held you beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you'll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart

Take back that sad word good-bye
Bring back the joy to my life
Don't leave me here with these tears
Come and kiss this pain away
I can't forget the day you left
Time is so unkind
And life is so cruel without you here beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you'll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many nights
Un-break my heart
My heart

Don't leave me in all this pain
Don't leave me out in the rain
Bring back the nights when I held you beside me

Un-break my heart
Say you'll love me again
Undo this hurt you caused
When you walked out the door
And walked out of my life
Un-cry these tears
I cried so many, many nights
Un-break my

Un-break my heart oh baby
Come back and say you love me
Un-break my heart
Sweet darlin'
Without you I just can't go on
Can't go on....

Red House Painters Katy Song

some escape some door to open
this path seems the blackest but i
guess it’s the soonest
but there in the clearing i
know you’ll be wearing
your young aching smile and
waving your hand
can’t go with my heart when i
can’t feel what’s in it i
thought you’d come over
but for some reason you didn’t
glass on the pavement under my shoe
without you is all my life amounts to

a final sleep no
words from my cutting
mouth to your ear or
taut wicked pinches
from my fingers to your bitter face
that i can’t heal
i know tomorrow
you will be
somewhere in london
living with someone
you’ve got some kind of family
there to turn to
and that’s more than i could ever give you

a chance for calm
a hope for freedom
outlet from my cold solitary kingdom
by the forest of our spring stay
where you walked away
and left a bleeding part of me
empty and bothered
watching the water
quiet in the corner
numb and falling through
without you what does my life amount to?

Running Bear

Johnny Preston

1959

YES! I was going to post this. Good call menstrom.

This was a song we sang at  camp all the time. we had hand gestures for it and everything… haha

Good call indeed. Now all I need is a little white dove.

On the bank of the river stood Running Bear, young Indian brave
On the other side of the river stood his lovely Indian maid
Little White Dove was her name, such a lovely sight to see
But their tribes fought with each other, so their love could never be

Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that couldn’t die

He couldn’t swim the raging river ‘cause the river was too wide
He couldn’t reach the Little White Dove waiting on the other side
In the moonlight he could see her throwing kisses ‘cross the waves
Her little heart was beating faster waiting for her Indian brave

Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that couldn’t die

Running Bear dove in the water, Little White Dove did the same
And they swam out to each other through the swirling stream they came
As their hands touched and their lips met, the raging river pulled them down
Now they’ll always be together in their happy hunting ground

Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that couldn’t die

Jeremy Northam The Land of Might-Have-Been

Somewhere there’s another land
different from this world below,
far more mercifully planned
than the cruel place we know.
Innocence and peace are there—
all is good that is desired.
Faces there are always fair;
love grows never old nor tired.

We shall never find that lovely
land of might-have-been.
I can never be your king nor
you can be my queen.
Days may pass and years may pass
and seas may lie between—
We shall never find that lovely
land of might-have-been.

Sometimes on the rarest nights
comes the vision calm and clear,
gleaming with unearthly lights
on our path of doubt and fear.
Winds from that far land are blown, whispering with secret breath—
hope that plays a tune alone,
love that conquers pain and death.

Shall we ever find that lovely
land of might-have-been?
Will I ever be your king or you
at last my queen?
Days may pass and years may pass
and seas may lie between—
Shall we ever find that lovely
land of might-have-been?

Death Cab For Cutie I Will Follow You Into the Dark

Another submission to thesaddestsong

I’ve always thought this song was beautiful but not necessarily sad. I mean, the idea of loving someone so much that you’re willing to forgo the afterlife to be with them in “the dark” is touching and should be happy, right? Watching this video completely changed that opinion. 2:18 always gets me.

I always thought this song was unnecessarily emo and sad, but not that touching. I think this is due to the fact that I took the song to mean “if you die, I will die cause I’d be sad” and not “I’ll forgo the afterlife to be with you in the dark”, which is a little bit more touching.

Obvioulsy, the video doesn’t help my view.

Using bunnies is very Where the Red Fern Grows of them, I think. It wouldn’t seem nearly as sad if they were people, because animals are incapable of purposefully doing bad things, so their actions are always more noble and pure. However, this is a sad song.

Love of mine some day you will die
But I’ll be close behind
I’ll follow you into the dark

No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there’s no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I’ll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
“Son fear is the heart of love”
So I never went back

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there’s no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I’ll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It’s nothing to cry about
‘cause we’ll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the No’s on their vacancy signs

If there’s no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I’ll follow you into the dark
Then I’ll follow you into the dark

Ryan Adams The Sun Also Sets

My submission to thesaddestsong.

This can be replaced by pretty much any Ryan Adams song.

When you get the time
Sit down and write me a letter
When you’re feeling better
Drop me a line
I wanna know how it all works out
I had a feeling we were fading out
I didn’t know that people faded out so fast
And that people faded out
When there was love enough left to fix it
But, there it is
There it is, we are only one push from the nest
There it is, we are only one push from the nest.
There it is, the sun rises
But the sun sets, the sun also sets
When you get these feelings
Next time, next time
Oh, be sure
You’re gonna tear someone apart
I wanna know how it all works out
I had a feeling we were fading out
I didn’t know that people faded out
That people faded out so fast
I wanna show you what i’ve got inside
But you know those parts of me died
Just like that, they faded out
They faded out so fast
And there was love enough left to fix it
But, there it is
There it is, we are only one shove from the nest
There it is, we are only one argument from deaf
There it is, we are only one moment from death
There it is, we are only one push from the nest
There it is, there it is
There it is, we are only one push from the nest
There it is, we are only one moment from death
The sun rises
But the sun also sets, the sun sets, the sun also sets

David Bowie Space Oddity

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on

Ground Control to Major Tom (Ten, Nine Eight, Seven, Six)
Commencing countdown, engines on (Five, Four, Three, Two)
Check ignition and may God’s love be with you (One, Liftoff)

This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You’ve really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it’s time to leave the capsule if you dare

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I’m stepping through the door
And I’m floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today

For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do

Though I’m past one hundred thousand miles
I’m feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much… she knows

Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit’s dead, there’s something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you….

Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there’s nothing I can do.

Today – Smashing Pumpkins

“Today” is one of the most popular songs of the 1990s, and is also responsible for one of the most recognizable riffs of the decade. The song was recorded in the early 90s as the Smashing Pumpkins were on the verge of collapse. Members in the band were beginning to develop drug problems, being pigeonholed by the media, and starting therapy. Lead singer Billy Corgan was losing “the ability to function” and contemplated ending his life.

“I was completely suicidal,” Corgan once said of the era. “I wrote that song in a cold bedroom on a day where it was like, ‘I’m either going to kill myself today, or I’m going to live because I’m sick of thinking about this.’”

Yet even with the lyrics, the song is often misinterpreted as an optimistic one, as recently evidenced from the chorus being used in a Visa commercial.

This is part one in a continuing series, entitled “The Happiest Sounding Sad Songs.”

I love when songs get misinterpreted to be the exact opposite of what they are. Other fine examples are the use of “Born in the USA” as a campaign song by Reagan, the use of “Fortunate Son” in a patriotic Wranglers commercial, and the playing of Nickelback songs on rock radio stations.

Today is the greatest
Day I ve ever kown
Cant live for tomorrow
Tomorrows much too long
I burn my eyes out
Before I get out

I wanted more
Than life could ever grant
Bored by the chore
Of saving face

Today is the greatest
Day I have ever known
Cant wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
Ill tear my heart out
Before I get out

Pink ricobn scars
That never forget
Ive tried so hard
To cleanse these regrets
My angel wings
Were bruised and restrained
My belly stings

Today is
Today is
Today is
The greatest day
That I have ever known

I want to turn you on
I want to turn you round
I want to turn you on
I want to turn you

Today is the greatest
Today is the greatest day
Today is the greatest day
That I have ever known

It is a great GH2 song, however.

Annie Lennox No More I Love Yous

I used to be lunatic from the gracious days
I used to be woebegone and so restless nights
My aching heart would bleed for you to see
Oh but now…
(I don’t find myself bouncing home whistling buttonhole tunes to make me cry)

No more “I love you’s”
The language is leaving me
No more “I love you’s”
Changes are shifting outside the word

(The lover speaks about the monsters)

I used to have demons in my room at night
Desire, despair, desire… SOOO MANY MONSTERS!
Oh but now…
(I don’t find myself bouncing home whistling buttonhole tunes to make me cry)

No more “I love you’s”
The language is leaving me
No more “I love you’s”
The language is leaving me in silence
No more “I love you’s”
Changes are shifting outside the word

(They were being really crazy
They were on the come.
And you know what mummy?
Everybody was being really crazy.
Uh huh. The monsters are crazy.
There are monsters outside.)

No more “I love you’s”
The language is leaving me
No more “I love you’s”
The language is leaving me in silence
No more “I love you’s”
Changes are shifting outside the word
Outside the word
